Burning Man Festival Installation
Jonathan Leung recieved a grant to build a pavilion at Burning Man Festival 2015 as part of his Part II studies at the University of Westminster, supported by Format Engineers. He will be travelling to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, united States with a crew of both academics and professionals to build the structure in August. The project was one of three chosen from a selection of projects submitted by Design Studio 10, developed from an extensive research into the growth patterns of Bismuth crystals.

The project has designed with a low cost fabrication logic and simple assembly processes, to create an architectural proposal for the week-long festival. The structure will be available to be explored and used by all participants of the festival, until the last day when it is to be set afire and burned as an pyrotechnic art piece.

Flower Michelin present at MEIA debate "How Moving Elements can Transform Urban Spaces"
Alex Flower joined representatives from Zac Monro Architects and Soup to discuss the philosophy, current status and future opportunities of ‘How Moving Elements can Transform Urban Spaces’. The talk, hosted by moving elements specialists MEIA, was fittingly held within the Paxton Locher designed Clerkenwell Green, whose large sliding roof launched the career of MEIA founder Monty Ravenscroft.

Both Alex Flower and Chantal Michelin were very involved in the Clerkenwell Green project whilst working at Paxton Locher, and reflected on the design’s innovative approach to the urban site’s constraints - made possible by moving elements. Over a decade on, the guests marvelled from the open plan internal/external courtyard as the large sliding roof transformed the landlocked space.

The presentations provoked much discussion on the benefits moving elements can bring to schemes like Clerkenwell Green, and on a much smaller scale Consort Road, unlocking sites, and creatively tackling spatial constraints – increasingly relevant in today’s constrictive London property market.
